Power and Handling of the 2019 Ram 1500

Ram made several changes this year to the 2019 Ram 1500 to help improve fuel economy, performance, payload, drivability, and towing capabilities. Ram upped the ante with 12,750 pounds of towing capability, a new eTorque system, and a new electronic locking rear differential. Keep reading to learn all about the power and handling of the Ram 1500.

All-new eTorque system

The eTorque mild hybrid system uses a belt-driven motor generator unit instead of the traditional alternator. This system works with a 48-volt battery pack which allows for quick and seamless start/stop function. The 48-volt eTorque's motor sends current to a 430 watt-hour lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)-Graphite battery while the engine is running. The air-cooled battery pack is mounted to the rear wall inside of the cabin and is the size of a small suitcase. During deceleration and braking, the eTorque unit recaptures energy to charge the battery pack.

Two Available Engines

For 2019, the Ram 1500 comes standard with an upgraded eTorque Pentastar V-6 engine making 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Advanced technologies in the Pentastar V-6 include a range of variable valve timing and two-step variable valve lift delivering the perfect mixture of power and fuel economy, based on the driver's demand. Delivering 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque is the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. Both engines are paired with an upgraded TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.

Re-engineered Axles

New this year is an available electronic locking differential allowing the driver to lock or unlock the differential on demand. The electronic system is available on four-wheel-drive trucks with 3,21 and 3.55 final drive ratio and lifted suspension, along with two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive trucks with the 3.92 ratio with the base or lifted suspension. The max tow package is also new this year and delivers a maximum towing capacity of 12,750 pounds.

Fuel Saving Technologies

Ram made several changes this year to help you save on fuel. The interactive deceleration fuel shut off (iDFSO) which during deceleration pauses fuel flow to the engine cylinders is now active in third gear and higher. During highway driving, fuel saver technology deactivates the cylinder to help save you fuel. Active noise cancellation in the cabin and frame-mounted active tuned mass modules expand the use of the fuel-saving technology cylinder cutoff. The exhaust system is now more than nine pounds lighter thanks to aluminum hanger brackets and optimal thickness of the exhaust pipes. Cooler air is fed to the intake of both engines through a new forward-facing air intake mounted behind the grille. A hydrocarbon absorption filter is included with this intake system to reduce evaporation emissions.
